Commander, United Kingdom Space Command
Air Vice-Marshal Thompson joined the RAF as a Weapons Technician in 1997. Commissioned in 2003 as a Communications Electronics Engineering Officer, he has subsequently served in a broad portfolio of assignments across Land, Air, Cyber and Space.
Following completion of Officer Training, he was assigned to Number 1 Air Control Centre where he was responsible for deployable Air Defence Radars and Air C2 systems. As an Operations Officer on exchange with the Royal Signals, he deployed with the Spearhead Land Element during crisis operations in the Levant and on Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Squadron Command was undertaken with 2 (Field Communications) Squadron, Tactical Communications Wing, where he returned to Afghanistan and supported global operations. On the Staff he has held appointments in PJHQ and MOD A Block, alongside broader appointments across Government.
Employed on wider Defence activity he has undertaken an exchange assignment with the US Department of Defence and been seconded to several UK Partner Agencies. Operational planning in MOD and PJHQ has been balanced against command appointments at every level and across multiple operations, including command of NATO CIS forces in the UK. Time in MOD has been spent as the Deputy Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of Defence Staff, with the responsibility for Defence Engagement, NATO and UN portfolios alongside international relations. He is a graduate of the Canadian Forces Joint Command & Staff Program, where his academic focus was Women, Peace & Security.
As the 1* Commander of RAF Global Enablement he was responsible for six air combat support forces and over 8000 personnel providing force protection, sustainment, and command & control for global Air operations. This appointment followed his 1* command of the RAF Regiment and RAF Police as the FP Force Commander. In January 2025, he was appointed as Deputy Commander of UK Space Command, responsible for Defence space education, force generation and the operational command of the Joint Force Space Component. Following graduation from the Higher Command & Staff Course in 2026, he was subsequently promoted to Air Vice-Marshal and appointed as Commander UK Space Command in June 2026.
Air Vice-Marshal Thompson is the President of RAF Field Gun and the RAF eSports Association. As a Trustee of the RAF Rugby Union Charity, he enjoys promoting the grassroots community game. More broadly, as the Lead Advocate for RAF Diversity Allies, he champions diversity across the RAF community.
His personal time is spent with his daughters and wife Katy, enjoying their passion for global travel adventures.
Minister of State for Defence Readiness and Industry
Luke Pollard MP was elected Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport in 2017. Born in Plymouth and the son of a submariner based in Devonport and a teacher at Marjon, he studied Politics at the University of Exeter before being elected president of the students’ union.
He has a background in business, working on major construction projects, and having worked for ITV, South West Water, Sainsbury’s, Edelman, and ABTA. He was also a Director for Field Consulting, where he advised firms in the rail, transport, and construction sectors, and worked on skyscrapers, football stadiums, and housing development projects.
After being elected to Parliament, he held various shadow briefs in opposition, including Shadow Environment Secretary, prior to joining government in July 2024 as Minister for the Armed Forces. He was appointed Minister of State for Defence Readiness and Industry in September 2025.
Luke is married to Sydney, lives in Plymouth, and enjoys wild swimming, watching Plymouth Argyle, and occasional bouts of gardening.

Chief of Staff of the Air Force, United States Air Force
Gen. Kenneth S. Wilsbach is the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. As Chief, he serves as the senior uniformed Air Force officer responsible for organizing, training and equipping approximately 665,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian forces serving in the United States and overseas. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the general and other service chiefs function as military advisers to the Secretary of War, National Security Council and the President.
Gen. Wilsbach commissioned in 1985 as a distinguished graduate of the University of Florida’s ROTC program and earned his pilot wings in 1986 as a distinguished graduate from Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. He has commanded a fighter squadron, operations group, two wings, two numbered air forces, two major commands and held various staff assignments including Director of Operations, Combined Air Operations Center and Director of Operations, U.S. Central Command.
Gen. Wilsbach is a command pilot with more than 6,200 hours in multiple aircraft, primarily in the F-15C, F-16C, MC-12 and F-22A, and has flown 71 combat missions in operations Northern Watch, Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom.
Senior Research Fellow for Applied Military Sciences, RUSI
Dr Jack Watling is Senior Research Fellow for Applied Military Sciences at the Royal United Services Institute. Jack works closely with the British military on the development of concepts of operation, assessments of the future operating environment, and conducts operational analysis of contemporary conflicts.
Jack is the author Statecraft: The New Rules of Power in a Divided World and The Arms of the Future: Technology and Close Combat in the Twenty First Century.
Jack's PhD examined the evolution of Britain’s policy responses to civil war in the early twentieth century. He has worked extensively with the Ukrainian Armed Forces during Russia's full-scale invasion, across NATO, and in Iraq, Mali, Rwanda, on Yemen and further afield.
Chief of the General Staff, British Army
General Sir ‘Roly’ Walker was commissioned into the Irish Guards in 1993. He commanded the Grenadier Guards in 2009, promoting to the General Staff four years later.
He has commanded at company, battle group, and brigade levels, variously in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, as well as joint command of global operations. On the Staff he has served in brigade, divisional, army and strategic HQs.
He was the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Military Strategy & Operations) at the MOD from April 2021, during which time he was responsible for advising on and directing new operations to support the government’s response to Covid, the death of the late Duke of Edinburgh, the withdrawal from Kabul, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II and coronation of King Charles III, numerous evacuation operations and most recently the Hamas attacks on Israel. In December 2023 it was announced that General Walker was to be appointed as the new Chief of the General Staff, succeeding General Sir Patrick Sanders. He assumed the appointment on 15 June 2024.
He was made a Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath in 2023, and a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in 2010. General Walker is the President of the Honourable Artillery Company, A rmy Rugby and Army Winter Sports.
Married, with three daughters, he lives in Herefordshire.
Head of Technology & Innovation Department, Leonardo Electronic Division, Land&Sea Business Area
Domenico Vigilante is the Head of Technology & Innovation Department in Leonardo Electronic Division, Land&Sea Business Area, with extensive experience in the fields of defence electronics, advanced sensor systems, and complex systems engineering.
He holds a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and a Master of Science from Virginia Tech (USA). Throughout his career, he has worked in highly demanding international environments, focusing on radar systems, defence technologies, and systems of systems.
Over the years, he has held positions of increasing responsibility in research, development, and innovation, including leadership roles within CTO/Capability functions across multiple business lines. His expertise includes technology strategy and product roadmapping, R&D investment management, coordination of funded research programs (e.g., EDF, PNRM), open innovation, and collaboration with universities and research centres.
His technical background covers advanced radar systems (including AESA and multifunction radars), signal processing techniques, electronic warfare (ECM/ECCM), and command and control architectures for complex systems.
He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and the recipient of multiple innovation awards for the development of advanced algorithms and simulation tools in the field of sensing and complex system modelling.
Head of Geospatial UK and Future Programmes, Airbus Defence and Space
Mike is a senior leader within the UK’s Defence and Space community, with experience across the public and private sector, and with national and international Governments and agencies. He is a graduate from the University of Nottingham where he obtained his PhD in Chemistry, and is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and member of their Space Specialists Group.
Mike spent 15 years at Dstl, the research agency of the UK Ministry of Defence, undertaking a range of both technical and corporate leadership roles, including leading the Space Systems Science and Technology (S&T) Programme through a period of significant growth between 2017 and 2023, supporting the development of UK Space Command’s Defence Space Portfolio.
Mike moved to Airbus Defence and Space in early 2023. As Head of Geospatial UK and Future Programmes, his role includes leadership of Airbus’s Geospatial portfolio in the UK, leading defence space projects for UK Space Command, and developing innovative new solutions through the UK Defence R&D ecosystem supporting Airbus’ UK Space strategy.
Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATO
Air Chief Marshal Sir Johnny Stringer was born in Sale and educated at Watford Boys' Grammar School and New College, Oxford. Johnny joined the Jaguar Force at RAF Coltishall in 1993 after completing officer and pilot training. A Qualified Weapon Instructor, he flew operationally over the Former Yugoslavia and helped enforce the Northern Iraq No Fly Zone.
From 2007 to 2009, Johnny commanded 29 Squadron, the Typhoon Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Coningsby; leaving on promotion, he spent 2 years as DACOS Joint Effects in the J3 Division (Current Ops) of the UK Permanent Joint Headquarters at Northwood. He returned to New College as a visiting Trenchard Fellow on the Oxford Changing Character of War programme in Autumn 2011.
Johnny commanded RAF Coningsby and its Typhoon Wing, between October 2012 and September 2014, supporting national and overseas Typhoon operations, and displayed the Spitfire and Hurricane with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. He was posted as ACOS Ops to HQ Air Command in August 2015 before commanding No.83 Expeditionary Air Group as the UK Air Component Commander between October 2016 - October 2017, in charge of all national air operations in the fight against Daesh and across the Middle East. For this tour, Johnny was awarded the CBE in the May 2018 Operational Honours List. Promoted in February 2018, he wasChief of Staff Joint Forces Command and, from January 2020 to March 2021, Director Strategy in UK Strategic Command (JFC’s successor) - in this latter role he led the Command’s engagement on the UK Government’s 2021 Integrated Security and Defence Review.
Johnny held a professional industrial placement between May 2021 and June 2022. Promoted toAir Marshal (3*), he served as Deputy Commander NATO Allied Air Command between August 2022 and October 2025. Johnny was knighted in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List and selected for promotion to Air Chief Marshal and appointed as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe in March 2026.
He is a graduate of the UK Advanced and Higher Command and Staff Courses, the Royal College of Defence Studies and holds Masters degrees from Oxford and Kings College London. Johnny is married to Lisa and has two sons. His interests include history, literature, food and drink, and cycling..
Broadcaster & Analyst
Susannah is a broadcaster, financial commentator and former RAF Reserve officer who has anchored flagship news shows on BBC TV and radio and hosts major conferences around the world. At the BBC, Susannah was the anchor for World Business Report on the BBC World Service and BBC World TV. Prior to focusing on the financial news agenda, she was a reporter for the national BBC One Breakfast programme. Between 1997 and 2007 Susannah served in the Royal Air Force Reserves, joining 7644 Squadron, a media operations unit. As Sqn Ldr, she led the combat camera team on exercises and operations in the Middle East, the Balkans, the US and Eastern Europe. She was also UK representative on NATO’s Inter-Allied Confederation of Reserve Officers, and served on the Communications Commission for events in Strasbourg, Madrid and Berlin. She has interviewed world leaders, CEOs and central bankers on economic issues, tech trends and international relations at conferences including Deepfest AI 2025 in Riyadh, Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø, the World Green Economy Summit in Dubai, the International Banking Forum in Kuwait, the Sustainable Finance Forum in Abu Dhabi and Our Ocean in Oslo. She is currently the Chief Investment Strategist at Wealth Club, where she provides analysis for investors and the media. It’s the fifth time Susannah has hosted the GASCC and she is looking forward to chairing the debates at such a crucial time for defence and security.
Commander Royal Canadian Air Force
Lieutenant-General Speiser-Blanchet enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1990 and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in 1994 with a degree in Computer Engineering.
Earning her pilot wings March 1996, she served as a Rotary Wing Tactical Aviation pilot flying the CH146 Griffon helicopter at 1 Wing. Her operational and staff postings include 430e Escadron tactique d’hélicoptères (430 ETAH) in Valcartier, 1 Wing Headquarters in Kingston, 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters in Winnipeg, and 403 Helicopter Operational Training Squadron in Gagetown.
LGen Speiser-Blanchet served on multiple deployments as a helicopter pilot to include United Nations and NATO missions in Haiti and Bosnia. She also served as Deputy Commander (Operations) for Joint Task Force-IMPACT in Kuwait in 2019. In Canada, she has deployed on numerous domestic operations in response to regional emergencies and in support to other government agencies.
LGen Speiser-Blanchet has commanded at multiple levels, 403 Helicopter Operational Training Squadron, the Canadian Forces Intelligence Group, and the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Group. Strategic level appointments include Military Assistant to the Minister of National Defence, Special Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff, and Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).
A graduate of the Joint Command and Staff Programme (JCSP) and the Defence and Strategic Studies Course (DSSC) in Australia, she holds Masters degrees in Defence Studies from RMC and a Masters degree in Politics and Policy from Deakin University.
LGen Speiser-Blanchet is a Commander of the Order of Military Merit (CMM). She was promoted to her current rank in July 2025 and appointed Commander of the RCAF on 10 July, 2025.
She is married to Janin Blanchet, a retired tactical aviation pilot, and they have three amazing children, Emma, Zachary and Samuel.
Chief of the Air Staff, Royal Air Force
Born and educated in Northern Ireland, Smyth joined the RAF in 1991 via the Sixth Form Scholarship Scheme, and upon completion of flying training, spent 15 years as a frontline Harrier pilot and weapons instructor. He has extensive combat experience having flown hundreds of operational missions from both land bases and aircraft carriers over: Bosnia; Kosovo; Serbia; Iraq; and Afghanistan. In early staff roles Smyth worked in the UK Air & Space Warfare Centre and spent 2 tours in the F-35 Lightning programme, the latter based in Washington DC as the UK’s F-35 National Director.
In 2013 Smyth retrained as a Tornado pilot and became the Station Commander of RAF Marham, transitioning the base for F-35 integration. On promotion to Air Commodore (1*) in 2015 he became the Tornado Force Commander, and in parallel, the UK’s first F-35 Lightning Force Commander. He followed this with a short appointment in the MOD as the 1* Head of Carrier Enabled Power Projection (CEPP), before deploying to Qatar as Director of the 609th Combined Air and Space Operations Centre during the height of the Counter-Daesh campaign.
Promoted to Air Vice-Marshal (2*) in 2018, Smyth retrained as a Typhoon pilot and became Air Officer Commanding Number 1 Group (AOC 1Gp), where he was responsible for the Air Combat Group of the RAF. In 2020, Smyth then became UK MOD’s inaugural Director Space, setting the foundation for UK Space Command, building the Defence Space Programme, and producing UK’s foundational National and Defence Space Strategies.
Smyth was promoted to Air Marshal (3*) in 2022 and appointed as the RAF’s Deputy Commander (Operations): this role transitioned to become the UK Air and Space Commander in 2023 and was responsible for all RAF’s air and space operations globally.
In Apr 24 Smyth became the first RAF officer to hold the role of Deputy Chief of Defence Staff - Military Strategy and Operations (DCDS (MSO), responsible for the provision of military advice to senior leadership across government including the Prime Minister, the development of UK military strategy and its integration with partners across government and allies, and the commissioning of UK military operations at home and across the globe. During this tour Smyth was a routine member of COBR, the Joint Intelligence Committee, Small Ministerial Groups, and the National Security Council.
Smyth is a Patron of 2 charities: the Jon Egging Trust (supporting troubled teenagers) and the Mark Long Trust (giving disadvantaged individuals the wings to fly). He is also President of RAF Rugby, President of RAF Rowing, President of the RAF Small Arms Association, Admiral of RAF Sailing Association, a Board Member of the Freeman Air and Space Institute, and an ambassador for the RAF Charitable Trust. With strong links to Northern Ireland, Smyth is extremely proud to be Honorary Colonel for the 2nd Battalion (Northern Ireland) Army Cadet Force, Senior Mentor to the Northern Ireland Universities’ Air Squadron (NIUAS), and Patron of the Ulster Aviation Society, Ireland’s sole military aircraft museum.
Chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force
Gen. B. Chance Saltzman is the Chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force. As Chief, he serves as the senior uniformed Space Force officer responsible for the organization, training and equipping of all organic and assigned space forces serving in the United States and overseas. As members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chief of Space Operations and other service chiefs function as military advisors to the President, the Secretary of War, and the National Security Council.
Gen. Saltzman is a graduate of Boston University and was commissioned in 1991. He has operational experience with missile and space systems, as a Minuteman III launch officer, and as a satellite operator for the National Reconnaissance Office. He also served as the first Chief of Combat Plans for the Joint Space Operations Center, and later, as Chief of Combat Operations.
Gen. Saltzman has commanded at the squadron, group, and wing levels including the 614th Space Operations Squadron and 1st Space Control Squadron at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California; the 460th Operations Group at Buckley AFB, Colorado; and the Aerospace Data Facility Colorado, Aurora, Colorado. Before serving in his current assignment, Gen. Saltzman was the Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Operations, Cyber, and Nuclear, United States Space Force, the Pentagon, Arlington, Va.

Commander, Space Command Australia
Major General Novak was appointed as Commander Space Command in January 2024.
Major General Novak graduated from the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1995 to the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. His early career included regimental and staff appointments primarily within the 3rd Combat Signal Regiment, Army Headquarters, and as Commanding Officer of the 1st Combat Signal Regiment.
Subsequently, Major General Novak held senior staff appointments in the Office of National Intelligence and as Military Assistant to the Chief of Army. He then posted to the United States as the Australian Liaison Officer to United States Strategic Command. Upon return to Australia, Major General Novak served as Chief of Staff to the Chief of the Defence Force after which he was promoted to Brigadier in January 2020 and appointed Commander Defence Strategic Communications in the Chief Information Officer Group.
In December 2021, Major General Novak was appointed Commander of the Australian Army’s 6th Brigade where he led some of Defence’s most capable intelligence, surveillance, electronic warfare, cyber, battlespace control, and force-level engineering units.
Operationally, Major General Novak has deployed to Bougainville, Afghanistan, the broader Middle East Area of Operations, and twice to East Timor, commanding deployed forces at both sub- unit and unit level.
Major General Novak is a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff course, and holds a Masters of Science in Information Technology and a Masters of Arts in Strategy and Policy. He was awarded Member of the Order of Australia in 2023 Australia Day Honours for exceptional service in ADF command and liaison appointments, and a United States Legion of Merit for his contributions to the Australia – United States military to military relationship.
Major General Novak is married to Karina, and they have three daughters and a son. His interests include his family, world current affairs and most forms of motorsport.
Director, China Aerospace Studies Institute, National Defense University
Dr. Brendan Mulvaney is currently the Director of the China Aerospace Studies Institute at National Defense University. He is a Marine who served for a quarter of a century, where he flew more than 2000 hours as a AH-1W Cobra pilot, and was an Olmsted Scholar in Shanghai, China.
He enlisted in 1991 and was commissioned in 1993 after graduating from UC San Diego. He earned his Master’s in Leadership from the University of San Diego in 2002 and was selected as one of only three Marine Olmsted Scholars for 2003. He studied at Fudan University in Shanghai, China from 2003-2005 where he earned his Ph.D. in International Relations.
He served several tours in California, Iraq, Japan, and the Western Pacific. He served as the first Director of the Commandant’s Red Team, and supervised the implementation of Red Teaming in the Marine Corps. In 2013 he transferred to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was the Associate Chair for the Languages and Cultures Department, and taught Mandarin Chinese, Chinese culture, and cross-cultural literacy.
He and his wife, Samantha, have twin nineteen-year old boys, Sean and Ryan, and live in Alexandria, VA.

Vice President and General Manager, F-35 Lightning II Program
Chauncey McIntosh is the Vice President and General Manager of the F-35 Lightning II program. In this capacity, McIntosh is responsible for further strengthening positive customer experiences by reinforcing and continually growing the capability and reliability of the F-35; showcasing significant program progress; and ensuring the F-35 program meets the speed, agility, quality and affordability requirements deserved and expected by U.S. and international customers.
McIntosh is a proven leader with more than 20 years of business, program management, engineering and customer engagement experience and has delivered exceptional results on many of Lockheed Martin’s highest profile programs.
Before assuming his current role, he was the Vice President and General Manager of the Integrated Warfare Systems and Sensors line of business for Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, which is responsible for Aegis Weapon System software development. In this role, he was responsible for the strategic, operational and financial performance of missile defense, radar, shipbuilding, directed energy and combat system integration programs that serve to increase customer capability and help achieve mission success. He was responsible for the general management of eight domestic sites, as well as international locations comprising more than 9,500 employees.
In addition, McIntosh built on his foundation in software engineering, serving as the Vice President and General Manager of the Training and Logistics Solutions line of business, leading execution and strategic growth of mission readiness and sustainment programs across Lockheed Martin. During his tenure at Lockheed Martin, he has also held numerous positions of increasing responsibility in program and project management, software engineering, systems engineering and avionics design across the F-22, C-5, P-3 and S3 platforms.
McIntosh is a 2003 graduate of the Lockheed Martin Engineering Leadership Development Program and a 2013 graduate of the Lockheed Martin Program Management Development Program.

Director Integrated Air & Missile Defence, Royal Air Force
Air Vice-Marshal Andrew Martin established the IAMD Directorate within the UK’s Military Strategic Headquarters following a tour as the Deputy Director of RAF Capability & Programmes. He is the UK lead for Joint UK/US/Australian IAMD collaboration and Chair of the NATO Enhanced Air C2 Programme Steering Board.
Air Vice-Marshal Martin has served on the Staff of the RAF’s Air Defence Weapons Instructor Course, as a Plans Officer in the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters, as Deputy Commander of the RAF Air Defence Operational Test Squadron, as the RAF’s Deputy ISR Force Commander, and in a range of Capability Acquisition roles. Martin’s operational experience includes tours in the Former Yugoslavia, Falklands, and Afghanistan, as Chief of Combat Operations in the US CENTCOM CAOC in Qatar, as Commander of the UK Air Wing at Kandahar, and most recently as Deputy Commander of the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force.
Air Vice-Marshal Martin completed Advanced Staff Training at the Canadian Forces’ College, Toronto, where he gained a Masters’ Degree in Defence Studies, and is a Distinguished Graduate of the US National War College where he gained a Master of Science Degree in National Security Strategy.
Air and Space Commander, Royal Air Force
Allan Marshall was commissioned into the Royal Air Force (RAF) in September 1991.
Following completion of a Service sponsored engineering degree at Cambridge University and pilot training, Marshall spent the first ten years of his career flying the Harrier. During this period, he completed several operational tours, including Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan; gained experience of embarked operations on Invincible-class aircraft carriers and undertook instructional, standardisation, and test and evaluation roles within the Harrier Force.
Subsequently, he gained procurement experience as the UK requirements manager for the Joint Strike Fighter programme, before converting to the Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) role. He served as officer commanding No. V(AC) (Army Co-operation) Squadron, operating Sentinel and Shadow aircraft on operations in Afghanistan, Libya and Mali.
Two joint roles within the Ministry of Defence followed: Assistant Head Global Commitments and Counter Terrorism within the Operations Directorate and Deputy Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defence Staff, before he took command of RAF Waddington in March 2016, responsible for Reaper, Rivet Joint, Sentinel, Sentry E-3D, Shadow and Intelligence analysis capabilities.
After completion of the Higher Command and Staff Course, the US Capstone Programme and a research fellowship at Oxford University focusing on strategic intelligence, he returned to the Ministry of Defence in 2018 as Head of Defence Commitments and Crisis within the Security, Policy and Operations area.
In April 2020, he was appointed as Air Officer Commanding Number 1 Group, and in
November 2021, he took the post of Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Operations & Commitments). In March 2024, he commenced duties as the United Kingdom’s Air and Space Commander.
He is married to Air Marshal Suraya Marshall, and together they have two children.
Commander Cyber & Specialist Operations Command
Rob Magowan joined the Royal Marines in 1989 after reading chemistry at Southampton university. His career to Lt Col included an operational tour of Northern Ireland, US Marine Corps staff college, the first deployment to Afghanistan post 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Subsequently, he worked in the Cabinet Office, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Ministry of Defence, with a focus on intelligence. He commanded the Royal Marines 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group, redeploying to Afghanistan.
As a Brigadier he spent a year in Kabul, was head of Royal Navy people policy and commanded the UK’s Joint Forces Intelligence Group. He has been Commandant General Royal Marines twice, and on the first occasion also assumed command of the European Union Naval Force Somalia. Further as a Major General, he has held capability jobs in the Navy and MOD.
As a Lieutenant General, he was deputy commander of the then UK Strategic Command and then head of capability for Defence. He was appointed Commander Cyber & Specialist Operations Command in March 2026. He is the Defence Buddhist champion, chairs the Defence Mindfulness steering group and is president of the Council for Cadet Rifle Shooting. He is also president of the Royal Navy Mountaineering Club, Royal Navy Netball Association and Royal Navy Rifle Association. He is president of the charity 65 Degrees North.
Corporate VP and President of Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector
Thomas (Tom) H. Jones is corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector, a premier provider of military aircraft, autonomous systems, aerospace structures and next-generation solutions with major operations throughout the United States, including California, Florida, Mississippi, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah.
Previously, Jones was sector vice president and general manager of the Airborne Sensors & Networks division for Northrop Grumman’s Mission Systems sector where he led the development of C4ISR and multi-function sensor capabilities for U.S. and global customers.
Prior to that, Jones was sector vice president and general manager for Advanced Concepts and Technologies, also at Mission Systems, where he oversaw development of advanced systems solutions, strategic planning, customer R&D, external partnerships and innovation initiatives that helped drive future business captures. He also previously served as vice president of the company’s Undersea Systems business unit. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman in 2011, Jones served in a variety of technology leadership roles of increasing responsibility at Rockwell International and Boeing.
First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, Royal Navy
General Gwyn commissioned into the Royal Marines in 1990. His time as a junior officer was spent in the Commando Logistics Regiment, competing for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in cross-country skiing and on operations in Northern Ireland with 42 Commando RM.
A graduate of the Advanced Command and Staff Course at the Military College Shrivenham, where he completed a master’s degree in Defence Studies in 2004, he went on to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel overseeing global operations in PJHQ, before a Commanding Officer appointment in 2009. On completion of his command tour he was promoted to Colonel and deployed for 12 months to Afghanistan, for which he was awarded an OBE, returning to the UK in 2012 as the Military Assistant to the Prime Minister in No 10 Downing Street.
After two years in No. 10, he completed the Higher Command and Staff Course, was promoted to Brigadier and took up a 3* civilian appointment in the Cabinet Office as Deputy National Security Advisor for Conflict, Stability and Defence. In April 2017 he moved back to the military and took command of 3 Commando Brigade, conducting exercises and overseeing operational deployments around the world. He was promoted to Major General in January 2019, in which rank he served first in the Royal Navy as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff and subsequently commanded a tri-service organisation.
In August 2022 he was appointed Vice Chief of the Defence Staff and promoted to General. Since August 2024, General Gwyn has been the Strategic Advisor to the Secretary of State for Defence. In this role, he has negotiated the UK’s Defence Agreement with Germany and is cohering the UK’s strategic partnership with Norway. He lives with his wife and children and enjoys a range of activities including sailing, skiing and creative writing.
Deputy Director Defence and Security, RAND
James Black is deputy director of the Defence and Security research group at RAND Europe. He previously led the Defence Strategy, Policy and Capability research portfolio in Europe. He also leads the RAND Europe Space Hub (RESH) and advises the Centre for Defence Economics and Acquisition.
Black's research focuses on the future of European and transatlantic defence and deterrence, and the impact of emerging tech and threats on strategic competition and warfighting. He has delivered a wide range of interdisciplinary studies for the Australian, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, German, Norwegian, Polish, Swedish, Ukrainian, UK and U.S. militaries, as well as EU, NATO and UN agencies. He is also actively involved in wargaming, previously as lead designer of strategic exercises at the Royal College of Defence Studies.
Research interests include NATO/EU defence amidst Russia's War in Ukraine; military strategy, concepts and capability; force development, acquisition and industry; and the impact of emerging technologies (e.g. AI, drones, DEW, space). His research has featured in BBC News, Financial Times, New York Times, Politico, Reuters, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, as well as other outlets and academic journals. He has briefed the UK Defence and Foreign Affairs Committees, the Lords AI Committee, a U.S. Congressional commission, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and UN OEWG negotiations. He was previously a non-resident NATO 2030 fellow.
Prior to RAND, Black worked in Parliament. He holds a double M.A.-M.Sc. in international security from Sciences Po and the LSE and a B.A. with Honors in history from the University of Cambridge.
Director Capabilities & Programmes
Air Vice-Marshal James Beck joined the RAF in 1997 having completed a degree in Electronic and Communication Engineering at Bath University. He spent the first ten years of his career flying the Tornado GR4. During this period, he completed several operational tours, including flying extensive sorties over Iraq and Libya. He is a graduate of the Qualified Weapons Instructor Course and was selected to be the Tornado Test and Evaluation Pilot on the Fast-Jet and Weapons Operational Evaluation Unit.
In staff roles, Beck has worked as the Tornado Requirements Manager, SO1 Current Platforms for Planning Round 10 and the subsequent Strategic Defence and Security Review for which he was responsible for future Combat Air Strategy.
Later in the same year, Beck was selected to Command 17(R) Squadron, which became the first UK squadron to operate the F-35B. During his 3-year tenure, he led 17(R) Squadron in becoming the first non-US unit to operate the F-35 under total sovereign jurisdiction for which he was made an OBE. Additionally, the Team completed a significant part of the Operational Test and Evaluation that was essential for the UK to declare Initial Operating Capability (IOC) towards the end of 2018. In doing so, he amassed 300 flying hours and became fully qualified in all operational roles of Lightning, including day/night STOVL.
In 2017, on promotion to Group Captain, Beck became the Battle Director in the AFCENT Combined Operational Centre in Al-Udeid for a four-month deployment; following which, he returned to the UK to assume the appointment of Lightning and UK Weapons Programme Director. In July 2019, Beck took Command of RAF Marham – the UK’s sole F-35 Main Operating Base – during a critical period that included the build-up of the Operational Conversion Unit, the Force’s transition to IOC (Maritime) and the deployment and delivery phases of Carrier Strike 21. From 2019-2021 Beck was an Aide de Camp to Her Majesty the Queen.
Following completion of the Higher Command and Staff Course, Beck was promoted to Air Commodore and appointed to be Head of Capability Strategy with Air Capability in 2022. In April 2024, Beck was promoted to Air Vice-Marshal and appointed as the RAF’s Director Capability & Programmes.
James is married to Amy and has two children, Charlotte and Oliver. He enjoys football, fly fishing and sailing his boat on the River Cam.
Co-Director of Freeman Air & Space Institute, King’s College London
Dr Julia Balm is a Research Associate at the Freeman Air and Space Institute at King’s College London. She researches contemporary space power with a particular focus on the needs and motivations of current and emerging space powers. She held the first fully-funded FASI studentship from 2020-2023 for a thesis building a theoretical framework for the New Space Age. Balm has advocated for an interdisciplinary approach to the space domain, working across the House of Lords, Ministry of Defence, Secretary of State's Office for Net Assessments and Challenge, and the Defence Academy to deliver research on cross sector strategy and pan-governmental approaches to security challenges. Balm teaches officer courses on air and space power at the Joint Services Command and Staff College for the Royal Air Force. She was a Junior Non-Resident Associate Fellow in the NATO Defence College 2024-2025. She holds a PhD in space strategy and an MA in Non-Proliferation and International Security from King’s College London, is also a graduate of St Michael's College at the University of Toronto.
President, The Air & Space Power Association
Greg served for 36 years in the Royal Air Force, retiring in 2016. He was a combat pilot for the first 20 of those years, flying the Tornado GR1/4 and the CF-18 Hornet aircraft. He retired as the Deputy Commander of the Royal Air Force, where he had overall responsibility for operations.
Subsequently, Greg has worked in the private sector with a number of companies, including Cobham plc, AirTanker Ltd and Ultra Electronics Ltd. He became an Executive Director on the Board of Cobham Ltd after its very successful transfer to private ownership, until its subsequent disposal in 2025. He has been and remains a non-Executive Member of the NATS (National Air Traffic Services) Board since 2022. He assumed the role of Chairman for ASG Aerospace Ltd in June 2026.
Greg is President of the UK’s Air & Space Power Association, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI). He is also a chair for senior programmes at the Windsor Leadership Trust, and a trustee of “Flying for Freedom”, which enables wounded, injured and sick service personnel to fly solo in microlights.”
Director of Training Strategy, BAE Systems
Stuart Atha joined BAE Systems in 2020. Following roles in support and training, he is now responsible for advising the Company on all NATO matters. He is a member of the Air Board and Chair of PPM Ltd, a wholly owned entity specialising in advanced RF-over-fibre technology. Alongside his Company responsibilities for NATO, Stuart is also Head of the UK delegation to the NATO Industrial Advisory Group, NATO’s source of industrial insight and conscience.
Prior to joining BAE Systems, Stuart served in the RAF for 35 years. Following his first tour as a flying instructor on the Hawk aircraft, he flew the Harrier aircraft from 1990 to 2003, flying combat missions over Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq. Stuart commanded RAF Coningsby and the Eurofighter Typhoon Force 2006-2008, overseeing the Typhoon entry to operational service.
During this tour Stuart also had the privilege of displaying Spitfires and Hurricanes of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. In 2009/10 he commanded the UK Air Component operating in the Gulf and Afghanistan. In 2011 he headed the Ministry of Defence’s Libyan operations team, reporting directly to the UK National Security Council, following which he commanded No 1 Group, which comprised a diverse array of air and space forces including combat aircraft, ISTAR assets and the National Air and Space Operations Centre. As the UK Air Defence Commander, he was responsible for developing and delivering the London Olympics’ Air Security Plan in 2012.
Stuart’s staff experience includes posts in the RAF Air Warfare Centre and MOD including as personal staff officer to the Chief of the Air Staff. Between 2014 and 2016 he was deputy commander of the Permanent Joint Headquarters, responsible for all UK operations abroad and most notably involving Afghanistan. Stuart’s final tour in uniform was as Deputy Commander of the RAF, the Air Force Board member responsible for RAF operations 2016-2019, a tour that was dominated by the counter-ISIS campaign in Iraq/Syria and NATO’s response to a resurgent Russia.
Stuart is an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham, lecturing on contemporary air power subjects, and Patron of the Jon Egging Trust, a charity that seeks to inspire and develop young people. He is also privileged to be the RAF Commissioner on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and a Director on the Board of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Stuart lives in Teddington, London with his wife Caroline and has 5 adult children.
